![]() ![]() Joining a gang of outlaws in a mid-1890s American West recovering from a devastating flu outbreak is Ada, an 18-year-old woman, married for a year and without a child to show for it. In her latest novel, “Outlawed” (Bloomsbury, 272 pp., ★★★½ out of four), Anna North presents a far different perspective on the genre, one forged by women, Black and nonbinary people looking for the freedom, space and right to exist in a world that largely doesn’t want them. But theirs aren’t the only stories worth telling, nor should they get to have all the fun that comes with romanticized tales of the Old West. The myth of the Western is one largely forged by men, telling stories of other men on frontierland adventures, brimming with machismo. In OtherWise Christian, I quote Hartke several times! His biggest contribution comes in chapter 5, but Hartke also shows up in chapters 6, 11, 13, 14, 15. Whereas OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation is unapologetic and mostly follows a trail of scripture references, Hartke’s book has a softer touch and wonderfully weaves in the personal faith experiences of several transgender Christians.įor allies who want or need to hear more about the struggles and experiences of transgender Christians, Hartke’s book is a great one-stop option that combines stories, with biblical and theological reflection. Another book that I like to recommend is Austen Hartke‘s 2018 Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians. ![]() ![]() ![]() A copy of the book is not included in this set of resources.
